Media forms:
What conventions of advertising are evident in this text?
The conventions of advertising are evident in this advert because you see people dancing together happy this that everyone is getting along and are happy. As the end they show “life’s for sharing” this shows that everyone in the advert are sharing the moment with each other and it also shows people using their phones to tell other people or to capture the moment. They do this to show the relevance it has with the network and the advert for T-mobile. The conventions of this advert also show that there aren’t any restrictions in the society/ community because it shows that every one of all ethnicities, gender and race can be in the same place.
Representation:
How is technology represented in this advertisement?
Technology is represented in this advert through the use of people dancing together as it is fun it also shows technology as fun. Everyone is dancing in time with each other to show they are in sync with each other. This is an example of what the phone company does, they sync together sharing things with each other. Also the advert cuts to people using their phones to relate to the advert and to link back to T-mobile’s motto of 2 “life’s for sharing”. The advert plays a variety of songs to show the variety in the target audience that use T-mobile’s phone network. Technology is also bringing everyone together. Its set in a train station to grab the attention of all target audiences as everyone is together at the train station. The phone network links as it links with people coming together through the use of technology.
Institution:
What is communicated about the T-mobile brand and the experience it offers?
T-mobile offer the chance to share with each other, therefore people in the ad are sharing the experience with each other and people on their phones are sharing it with people that aren’t there.  T-mobile give offers such as fast communication to people that are also on T-mobile. Another thing that T-mobile offer is its fast communication this is shown in the advert through the use of different dance moves that are quite quick and at a constant pace. It shows how modern the technology is through the use of modern dancing but also shows older dance moves and music being played so show that anyone can use their network. This also shows how they try keeping up to date.

Textual analysis on Sun newspaper advert

1. How does the advert use codes and conventions to appeal to its audience?
The advert uses codes and conventions to appeal to its audience through the usage of humour. The advert shows that the Sun newspaper is better because it is a print based format. The advert appeals to the target audience because it shows celebs on few of the pages. What the audience expect to see from this advert is how the newspaper is shown as better than technology. The advert isn’t long and shows specific parts that grab the attention of the viewer. It has a close up of the newspaper to show that the advert is going to be about this specific item. Also we then see that the newspaper gets unfolded to reveal the whole newspaper. We then see the logo of the newspaper which is the sun and then it turns the page to then focus on an image of Simon cowl, the page then opens out to a double page spread and the voice over explains how the view is full size showing the full image. It then shows how the newspaper is similar to the IPhone through showing the Sudoku. The usage of the voiceover and the hand gestures throughout the advert keeps the audience’s attention in order to keep watching and find out more about what is shown to be better than today’s technology for example the IPhone. It also shows how the audience can get a full screen display and no reception would be lost when the voiceover explains this we as the target audience immediately stay interested in the advert because the description is persuasive in explaining how its better.
2. How is new technology represented in advertisements?
Technology is being represented as something not as good as the print format. The advert makes a joke out of technology such as the IPhone by saying how with the newspaper you get a full retina display on a much bigger screen but in this instance it’s a full page view. Also the voiceover is explaining certain things about the sun newspaper such as the newspaper being thin, the voiceover is also shown in the IPhone advert and also the hand gestures that are shown in the advert for the newspaper are also shown in the IPhone advert. The voiceover explains how the newspaper can be shared with anyone and that it can be put back together as one whole piece of news, furthermore we get shown that the newspaper won’t ever lose reception like technology seems to do in some cases. The advert is trying to show how the print format is also good to have as it can do the same as what technology can do. We get told that through the use of technology you can’t physically turn the page of a newspaper whereas the use of a print format you get the real feeling of turning the page.  Today’s technology is represented as a bad thing because people want to be able to turn the page of the newspaper rather than touching the screen in order to turn the page. By comparing the newspaper to technology shows that in some cases the newspaper (print format) does the same.
3. What does the advertisement tell you about the values and ideologies of the sun newspaper?
The advertisement tells me that the ideologies are represented as dominant because it shows institutions name throughout the advert as the newspaper is the sun and this is the institutions name. Also that another ideology can be alternative because it appeals to both male and female readers. The advertisement tells me that the values of the sun newspaper are good because it appeals to its target audience and grabs the reader attention through the use of images and bold text. Also the sun institution has good values because they appeal to a range of audiences this shows that the sun as an institution know their audience and know what they expect to see from the advert. The advertisement of the sun newspaper tells me that the ideologies are important because in order to generalise specific things in the advert that appeal to it;s audience they have to know who should be shown more of in order to show whether the ideologies are dominant or alternative. In this case the ideologies are both shown because they advert shows both females and males such as Rihanna and Simon Cowl. In the advert the newspaper shows football, celebs, and games such as Sudoku this is for both men and women. The image of Rihanna appeals to both men and women because some females aspire to be like her or see her as a role model and men can appeal to her because they might like her and because she is pretty and could see her as a sex object. The use of having young celebrities shown in the newspaper gives the impression that the audience is young and can be quite old as well.
4. How does the advertisement appeal to its audience?
The advertisement of the sun newspaper appeals to its target audience because I have identified that the age range for this newspaper and advert is aimed at 16-4o year olds. As it shows celebrities of both a young age range and an older age range such as Rihanna is young and Simon Cowl is quite old. Also the demographics of the target audience would be living in the city and that they like the busy life also that they could always be on the go. The target audience that this advertisement appeals to can be both males and females as they are both represented throughout the advert by showing males and females in the newspaper. The social economic groups that the advertisement and the products would appeal to would be social classes C2, D and E because the younger audience would be students and are therefore are unemployed. The C2 class would appeal to this because they are slightly older and are employed earning a reasonable amount of money and therefore can afford to buy this newspaper and can relate to it. However the classes D and E can appeal to this newspaper and its advertisement because it has information in side it that the older target audience can relate to such as the main news stories that are inside. By having sports pages in the newspaper at the back shows that the male target audience are separated from the female target audience as the males have sports pages at the back of the newspaper and the females have gossip and celebrity based stories and information at the front. This shows that the advertise is appealing to both genders as the newspaper caters for both target audiences.

New Moon Trailer- Ms Van Der Sanden

What techniques does this film
trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
The first technique used to persuade the audience to see the film is
the usage of quick cuts to various different scenes in the film. These fast shots of the film are the key events in the film. The usage of these quick shots to through the different scenes suggests that these scenes are important in the film and that they are some of the main scenes. They persuade the audience by showing these main scenes but they don’t give too much away this engages the audience straight away making them want to go and watch the film. However
another technique used is the usage of non-diegetic sounds such as the music being played. The music being played automatically creates a build-up of tension, making the audience want to know what is going to happen next. This is a result of the music being so loud and jumpy at times. Making the audience eager to watch more of that particular scene.
The males are represented as dominant, powerful and quite strong. In the scene where 'Edward' is telling 'Bella' that it is the last time they will see each other the camera angle is lowered on 'Edward' making him look more dominant over 'Bella' this shows that he is more superior than she is. Another example of where the male looks dominant is when 'Jacob' is telling Bella that
'Edward' doesn't want her anymore the camera angle is lowered making him look
dominant and as if he is in control over 'Bella'.
Females are represented as weak and helpless. An example of this is when 'Jacob' saved her after beingnearly drowned. She is lying on the floor and looks as if she can't help herself and that 'Jacob' has to help her. However an example earlier than this is when 'Bella' is laying on the floor in the woods curled up the angle of the camera is higher making her look smaller and not so dominant this shows that she is weaker.
The target audience that this film will most likely appeal to is teenagers aged 13-16. This film is aimed at these age groups because of the two main characters (protagonists) 'Edward' and 'Jacob'. As these are seen as good looking and they are what teenage girls like. As this film has a genre of fantasy/romantic this would target mostly the audience of females as they like
these types of films where romance is the main subject of the film. Furthermore the film may target a male audience because of how the males are represented as the more dominant sex of the film and they seem to look out for the female less dominant gender. An example of the film being targeted at males is during the fight scene between the vampires also when the wolves begin to fight in the forest.

The Untouchables- Ms Wigley

Definition of "suspense"
Suspense is the understanding of what is about to happen. E.g. what is about to happen in the next scene of the film.

1. How is editing used to build suspense in the scene?

Editing is used to build suspense in the start of the scene as it starts of slow, as it gets busy we as the audience begin to think something is going to happen, the long takes suggest it has a slow pace this makes the audience feel tense and anxious. While he is looking at the clock we get a point of view as if he is looking as well. The cut to the clock shows something will happen at 12pm this signifies that this point is important. The point of view shots cut to the women with the pram. This shows that the man who is the protagonist is very concerned about her baby. It then cuts to the other characters, this shows how the protagonist is looking for someone in particular. However the takes gradually get shorter as the suspense builds up towards the end of the scene.

2. How is time 'expanded' through the use of the editing as the pram falls down the steps?

Time is expanded through the use of quick cuts and point of view shots when it focuses on the pram and the baby. There are cuts to the people entering the station and when he is looking at the clock. The shots get closer to the clock each time to show it has importance in the film. Suspense is built up when the man in the doorway looking at the protagonist it is slow and time is extended when the pram is falling down the stairs, it takes a long time to reach the bottom, but during this moment other things are happening such as the shooting between all the men. The slow motion is used while the pram is falling there are quick takes of the protagonist shooting the other men and him trying to save the baby. There is cross cutting of this as he is shooting and looking at the baby. The cross cutting includes the baby, Shooting, mother and the protagonist.

Another reason as to why time is extended is through the use of the camera shot of the pram as is it descending down the stairs. we see a close up of the pram when he lets go of the pram, A high angle view of the baby, Extreme close up of the wheel of the pram, Point of view shot of the women looking at the pram, close up of the baby, long shot of the front of the pram as it is descending, low angle long shot, medium shot of the side of the pram, point of view of the mother and an extreme close up of the babies face.

The overall effect of these shots are how there is use of cross cutting and how all the shots and cross cutting affect the audience. They affect the audience because they want to know what’s going to happen, this then builds tension and at the end we get the sign of relief because we see the pram is ok at the end of the scene.

What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the
film?

This film is about a man called Tim played by an actor called Paul Rudd. He has to go to his boss' anual dinner but has to take a guest. he is struggling to find this guest. the director uses techniques to engage the audience to see the film by putting some of the best parts of the film not showing too much of the film to show the audience a bit of what is expected in the film. The film is a Comedy so the audience expect to see funny scenes in the film however the director shows this in order to show the viewers exactly what is expected of the film. The main audience of the film is males butis also women the age is around 15- 40+ it starrs Steve Corell who has been in Even almighty, Bruce Almighty and other films. Also Paul Rudd who has been in Knocked up, 40-Year-Old virgin and many more. By having Steve Corell as one of the main actors in the film shows the auceince that it's going to be funny as he is seen as a comedian of most films.

How are men represented in this trailer?

Men are represented as a dominant ideology because the main character is successful and is white. Also men are represented as quite superior. The director has shown Tim the first main character as a very well dressed man who means business by the way he is dressed. Tim is dressed smartly as a high end business would expect from it's workers. immedietly we get introduced to the main character at the start of the trailer this tells the audience he plays a main role in the film. Secondly we get introduced to another male who is dressed not so smart and less formal. This shows that he isn't so much of a success as the first main character "Tim" the second main character "Barry" appears to be a more laid back type of person who would rather be on his sofa watching telly and messing around than being at work and being successful.

On the basis of this trailer, what target audience would be attracted to this
film?

On the basis of this film trailer the target audience that would be attracted to this film would be motsly men because it is a film based on how a man wants to be successful. Also it shows men as a dominant figure to the male audience. However women can also watch this film just because they might have a husband or a boyfriend that wants them to go watch it with them. This target audience are attracted to it because of the way it has humor and is generally a funny film that any audience can have a laugh to. As Steve Corell is one of the main characters in this film most people will be able to recognize who he is because of previous films and will automatically know tha the film will be a comedy.

What Hollywood values and characteristics can you identify in this trailer?

The Hollywood values shown in this film trailer show the values of business and how the people are dressed smartly and formally this shows they are serious about their career and that are successful people. we see these business people in an office at the beginning of the trailer and throughout the rest of the trailer. However we see a slight change of scene, instead of being in the office we see one of the characters flat. this flat is shown as a tidy and quite luxurious place to live. This shows the audience that this person has a good amount of money.

Ms Van Der Sanden- summary of two articles.

The Critics
Need a Reboot. The Internet
Hasn't
Led Us Into a
New Dark Age.

The first article is about certain people not giving the
internet good publicity. One key phrase they have used to describe it as making
the nation stupid is “dumbing down” they said it gives unreliable information
to its viewers. The article explains how the uses of sites such as Wikipedia aren’t
as useful as books. The article mention’s that the use of internet makes people
ignorant and anti-social.

Bebo's new soap is all
product placement, no plot

The second article is about a soap that has been published
on Bebo. It has been targeted at the audience that uses bebo. Is has been said
it is quite similar to Disney channel programmes. It questions whether its
viewers need to see another show that is very similar to Disney channel shows using
the sub S-Club 7 dialogue. Also questions how the new soap published on bebo is
copying the wide variety of shows that use the fullest extent of its creative
reach and how it uses an excuse for only having three minutes as a reason to
why they haven’t got much of a plot.

Ms Van Der Sandan- Film Genres

The most popular film genre at present is family films according to this website- http://parks.swank.com/topMovies.html this shows films that were popular for 2010 and what will be quite popular for 2011. Each film shown is a type of film that anyone can watch no matter what age they are. I think these type of films are quite popular because any age group can watch it, any gender and any target audience. By target audience I mean each socio economic group like A,B,C1,C2,D,E. the use of technology is used quite a lot to produce these films because the main genre is animation. This means in order to have characters designers and artists would have to come together to create realistic cartoons. The only way to do this is by using technology.

To get this information i used this website-  http://www.filmsite.org/30sintro.html The most popular film genre that was in the 1930's and the 1940's was what was known as "The Golden Age" during this decade the golden age films were in black and white. However the 1930's used sound and colour revolutions. This then developed into these film genres; Ganster films, musicals, newspaper reporting films, historical biopics, social realism films, lighthearted screwball comedies, counmtry and westerns and horror films. I thinks these genre's were popular because they were shown in colour and had sound this was seen as something new more exciting, these films were mostly views as part of entertainment. Furthermore the most popular genre of film during the 1940's was war films as at that time there was wars, this gave people evidence of what was going on and was used for future references such as today we use it for historical use and to get knowledge of what was going on during these time periods.
