The Untouchables- Ms Wigley

Definition of "suspense"
Suspense is the understanding of what is about to happen. E.g. what is about to happen in the next scene of the film.

1. How is editing used to build suspense in the scene?

Editing is used to build suspense in the start of the scene as it starts of slow, as it gets busy we as the audience begin to think something is going to happen, the long takes suggest it has a slow pace this makes the audience feel tense and anxious. While he is looking at the clock we get a point of view as if he is looking as well. The cut to the clock shows something will happen at 12pm this signifies that this point is important. The point of view shots cut to the women with the pram. This shows that the man who is the protagonist is very concerned about her baby. It then cuts to the other characters, this shows how the protagonist is looking for someone in particular. However the takes gradually get shorter as the suspense builds up towards the end of the scene.

2. How is time 'expanded' through the use of the editing as the pram falls down the steps?

Time is expanded through the use of quick cuts and point of view shots when it focuses on the pram and the baby. There are cuts to the people entering the station and when he is looking at the clock. The shots get closer to the clock each time to show it has importance in the film. Suspense is built up when the man in the doorway looking at the protagonist it is slow and time is extended when the pram is falling down the stairs, it takes a long time to reach the bottom, but during this moment other things are happening such as the shooting between all the men. The slow motion is used while the pram is falling there are quick takes of the protagonist shooting the other men and him trying to save the baby. There is cross cutting of this as he is shooting and looking at the baby. The cross cutting includes the baby, Shooting, mother and the protagonist.

Another reason as to why time is extended is through the use of the camera shot of the pram as is it descending down the stairs. we see a close up of the pram when he lets go of the pram, A high angle view of the baby, Extreme close up of the wheel of the pram, Point of view shot of the women looking at the pram, close up of the baby, long shot of the front of the pram as it is descending, low angle long shot, medium shot of the side of the pram, point of view of the mother and an extreme close up of the babies face.

The overall effect of these shots are how there is use of cross cutting and how all the shots and cross cutting affect the audience. They affect the audience because they want to know what’s going to happen, this then builds tension and at the end we get the sign of relief because we see the pram is ok at the end of the scene.

What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the
film?

This film is about a man called Tim played by an actor called Paul Rudd. He has to go to his boss' anual dinner but has to take a guest. he is struggling to find this guest. the director uses techniques to engage the audience to see the film by putting some of the best parts of the film not showing too much of the film to show the audience a bit of what is expected in the film. The film is a Comedy so the audience expect to see funny scenes in the film however the director shows this in order to show the viewers exactly what is expected of the film. The main audience of the film is males butis also women the age is around 15- 40+ it starrs Steve Corell who has been in Even almighty, Bruce Almighty and other films. Also Paul Rudd who has been in Knocked up, 40-Year-Old virgin and many more. By having Steve Corell as one of the main actors in the film shows the auceince that it's going to be funny as he is seen as a comedian of most films.

How are men represented in this trailer?

Men are represented as a dominant ideology because the main character is successful and is white. Also men are represented as quite superior. The director has shown Tim the first main character as a very well dressed man who means business by the way he is dressed. Tim is dressed smartly as a high end business would expect from it's workers. immedietly we get introduced to the main character at the start of the trailer this tells the audience he plays a main role in the film. Secondly we get introduced to another male who is dressed not so smart and less formal. This shows that he isn't so much of a success as the first main character "Tim" the second main character "Barry" appears to be a more laid back type of person who would rather be on his sofa watching telly and messing around than being at work and being successful.

On the basis of this trailer, what target audience would be attracted to this
film?

On the basis of this film trailer the target audience that would be attracted to this film would be motsly men because it is a film based on how a man wants to be successful. Also it shows men as a dominant figure to the male audience. However women can also watch this film just because they might have a husband or a boyfriend that wants them to go watch it with them. This target audience are attracted to it because of the way it has humor and is generally a funny film that any audience can have a laugh to. As Steve Corell is one of the main characters in this film most people will be able to recognize who he is because of previous films and will automatically know tha the film will be a comedy.

What Hollywood values and characteristics can you identify in this trailer?

The Hollywood values shown in this film trailer show the values of business and how the people are dressed smartly and formally this shows they are serious about their career and that are successful people. we see these business people in an office at the beginning of the trailer and throughout the rest of the trailer. However we see a slight change of scene, instead of being in the office we see one of the characters flat. this flat is shown as a tidy and quite luxurious place to live. This shows the audience that this person has a good amount of money.

Ms Van Der Sanden- summary of two articles.

The Critics
Need a Reboot. The Internet
Hasn't
Led Us Into a
New Dark Age.

The first article is about certain people not giving the
internet good publicity. One key phrase they have used to describe it as making
the nation stupid is “dumbing down” they said it gives unreliable information
to its viewers. The article explains how the uses of sites such as Wikipedia aren’t
as useful as books. The article mention’s that the use of internet makes people
ignorant and anti-social.

Bebo's new soap is all
product placement, no plot

The second article is about a soap that has been published
on Bebo. It has been targeted at the audience that uses bebo. Is has been said
it is quite similar to Disney channel programmes. It questions whether its
viewers need to see another show that is very similar to Disney channel shows using
the sub S-Club 7 dialogue. Also questions how the new soap published on bebo is
copying the wide variety of shows that use the fullest extent of its creative
reach and how it uses an excuse for only having three minutes as a reason to
why they haven’t got much of a plot.

Ms Van Der Sandan- Film Genres

The most popular film genre at present is family films according to this website- http://parks.swank.com/topMovies.html this shows films that were popular for 2010 and what will be quite popular for 2011. Each film shown is a type of film that anyone can watch no matter what age they are. I think these type of films are quite popular because any age group can watch it, any gender and any target audience. By target audience I mean each socio economic group like A,B,C1,C2,D,E. the use of technology is used quite a lot to produce these films because the main genre is animation. This means in order to have characters designers and artists would have to come together to create realistic cartoons. The only way to do this is by using technology.

To get this information i used this website-  http://www.filmsite.org/30sintro.html The most popular film genre that was in the 1930's and the 1940's was what was known as "The Golden Age" during this decade the golden age films were in black and white. However the 1930's used sound and colour revolutions. This then developed into these film genres; Ganster films, musicals, newspaper reporting films, historical biopics, social realism films, lighthearted screwball comedies, counmtry and westerns and horror films. I thinks these genre's were popular because they were shown in colour and had sound this was seen as something new more exciting, these films were mostly views as part of entertainment. Furthermore the most popular genre of film during the 1940's was war films as at that time there was wars, this gave people evidence of what was going on and was used for future references such as today we use it for historical use and to get knowledge of what was going on during these time periods.

Ms Wigley "Kicks" Trailer

The trailer starts off with an extreme long shot with a low angle view following on to a close up of the footballer, then turns into a medium shot. The camera focuses on the footballer. The text fades in to the background and another close up. The close up is of the girl then an extreme close up is shown of the footballer. A medium shot of the girl, the text fades, an extreme close up of the girl, turns into fading text. There is then a long shot of both the girls, and then one of the girls called jasmine this then showed a low angle. The next shot type was a high angle of both girls lying down, which then showed an extreme long shot of the girls standing on a hill looking at the sunrise. A close up of the girls and the footballer in a car. Extreme close up of the man’s eye. Which then led on to a close up of everyone’s face then an extreme long shot of the girl with the gun and the text increases at the end of the scene?

The camera angles are mostly straight on. The camera movement in the first shot is panning the screen. Second shot tracks the girl touching the car. It then starts panning down towards the girl, then pans down the girl dancing. Most of the scenes seem to fade into each other.

Miss-en-scene is shown when the lighting seems to be quite dark, dull throughout the trailer. The body language is quite seductive in most parts of the trailer towards the footballer and the girls. The only part of costume change we see is when the girl is wearing her school uniform at the beginning of the trailer and when the boy is wearing his football kit. The colours used are quite dull colours because this gives a sense of seriousness. The colours used are like blacks, greys. The girl seems to be wearing grey, grey connotates a sense of strong emotion which can also gives the sense of them being moody.

The sound is non-diegetic as the girl voice is the voice over and there is music being played constantly. It becomes dietetic near the end when the girl is talking, the music stops and you hear a gunshot also in the middle of the trailer there is a smashing of glass.

The narrative is non linear. There is equilibrium because the girl seems to be fine, she gets along with people and everything seems to be quite peaceful.
This then goes into disequilibrium when she meets the girl jasmine; she then takes control over the footballer they both like. She then ends up shooting the guy at the end.

The genre of the film is a drama because this narrative is quite serious matter, the serious matter being that both girls like the same footballer.
